Nematology

Full-Service Plant Nematology Research

Ag Metrics Group - Root-knot nematode mitigation RKNCredit: USDA, William Wergin and Richard Sayre. Colorized by Stephen Ausmus.
At Florida Ag Research near Tampa, a complete nematology facility was established in 2010. This facility includes dedicated laboratories, greenhouses, field micro-plots, advanced microscopy, and pure cultures of key nematode species.

In 2024, Pacific Ag Research launched a West Coast laboratory at its Five Points, California station in the San Joaquin Valley.
The new lab provides advanced nematology field trials allowing nematicide developers, plant breeders, genetics researchers, grower cooperatives, and government agencies to have access in California to comprehensive nematology field trial and support lab services. The nematology lab provides growers and field scientists with services including sampling, nematode counts, identification, and monitoring.

Our California and Florida farms have in-ground micro-plots that establish nematode populations for close monitoring of plant responses to test substances. In these vessels, different soil types, selected nematode species, and individual crop plants are studied with minimal experimental variability. These micro-plot methods also minimize experiment costs, yet answer very specific questions regarding efficacy, product longevity, phytotoxicity, nematode life stage mortality, and specific plant responses.

Our nematology research capabilities include:
  • A dozen pure cultures of the most important American nematode pest species
  • Multiple Soil Extraction Methodologies
  • Root extraction and staining with enhanced imaging
  • Both In vitro and in vivo bioassays
  • Specialized soil application equipment including precision fumigation and deep soil injection
Nematode studies are conducted on a variety of crops including:
  • Almonds
  • Carrot
  • Citrus
  • Cucumber
  • Grapes
  • Onion
  • Pepper
  • Potato
  • Squash
  • Tomato
  • Walnut
